Create Your Own J-pop Summer Playlist! ♡

Hi, I'm still alive. ♡ And I was supposed to post this two weeks ago, but life decided to slap me in the face. It's better to be late than never!

Just to provide some context for this blog post: I love summer-y songs. Not only do I love the summer season but I love how you can jam out to a wide variety of sounds. Based on my summer playlist post of 2018, I was inspired to do a semi-masterlist of every J-pop summer song that I knew of. I want to give you all the novelty of picking and choosing from various categories to create your own playlist. I also want this to be a place to look for new song recommendations as well!

We can all agree that 2020 has been gone completely to shxt. It's a rough time for everyone and we're constantly in a state of turmoil and confusion. I was hesitant about whether I should post this or not. However, I decided to go for it because I hope that this could bring some spark of positivity. Perhaps listening to a new song could help lighten up the mood, even a little bit.. ♡

Before we begin, here are a few notes:

1. I categorized these songs in sections I believe describes them best. That is my opinion. There are many songs that could fit in multiple categories.

2. This semi-masterlist is ongoing. As I discover new summer songs, I will update this post along the way. If you have a recommendations for a summer song that I don't know or have missed, just let me know!

3.  Not all categories will have male groups, female groups, etc. because I have yet to find a song. Likewise, if you have a new recommendation for a summer song that fits that category, let me know. I'd appreciate it!

4. Yes, some categories are over- or under-saturated. As I remember or discover more songs, I hope to add more to other categories.

When you try to envision "summer," what is the scenery that comes to many people's minds? Sandy beaches, palm trees, bright blue oceans, sunny skies, the smell of coconuts and sea salt. To really bring out that tropical aesthetic, I tried to focus on songs that center on the following instruments: steel drums, ukulele, and guitars. You might find some songs that may not feature those instruments but has that very vibrant, happy, poppy vibe to them. There are also a few outliers that doesn't really have that super bubblegum pop sound but I believe really helps envision the ocean. The center track that I used to create this section is lol -エルオーエル-'s perfect summer.

In my opinion, I believe that summer is the best time to go on a drive. During the summer, my family and I would love to go on road trips to visit relatives and have fun. With "Driving Mix," there's two moods to this. The first mood is when you're starting your drive. You feel very excited, you feel pump, you're going to have a good time. The second mood is more chill and relaxing. You're finally on your way home after spending few days away; the summer sun is setting in the background. You might even feel nostalgic. Because of this, there's going to be a lot more diversity in the songs included here – a wide range of songs. Although, I'm trying to focus on a more upbeat and band sound with the center track being Suzuki Airi's Break it down.

If you love super cutesy songs with colorful music videos and idols having fun, this is the section for you. As a long time J-pop fan who started out loving idols, it would feel wrong if I didn't include every idol summer song that I knew and previously jammed to at one point in my life. This is for all of the people whose favorite idols are their sunshine, who loves cute concepts, who loves all of the rainbows and sparkles that come with it. While a lot of idols songs are generally happy-go-lucky in nature, I've chosen songs that really embodies the summer theme. Don't worry, you'll see a lot more idol songs in other parts of the post. Out of all of the sections I'm writing about, "Daydream" is my favorite and the songs where I usually go to the most during this summer season – or even during that transition from spring to summer. When looking for songs to go with this theme, I tend to look for songs that are calming, very chill, a little bit melancholic. These might be the type of songs that you might listen to while you sit next to the window, bathe in the early afternoon sun with a cup of tea in your hands. These could also be the type of songs you might listen to if you're reading or working on summer course work. The center track that I used to create this section was CHANMINA's Never Grow Up.

Honestly, it would be wrong of me to not include any ballads. Not everything about summer can be happy and upbeat. Sometimes, you just want to relax and listen to something soothing – maybe it would bring a tear to your eye as well. Or, perhaps you want to listen to a bittersweet song that makes you reminisce about old memories. While I did my best to find as many ballads as possible, I'll let you know first that a majority of these songs are pop-ballad in nature. Nevertheless, I really hope you find a song in this selection that you like~ The song that I used as the center for "Gone with The Wind" is Suda Masaki's Machigai Sagashi.

I think the summer season is a great time to go out, to travel and to eat all sorts of food. Yes, as much as I crave boba or ice cream all year round, there's just something about having it during the summer. You have more free time to explore and to enjoy yourself. Thus, I have created this section dedicated to songs that is centered on various sweet treats from ice cream to galbi. Although not all of the songs may be directly related to food outside of the song's title, a majority of the songs will be very cute and fun~ It's a bit more niche compared to the others, so there might not be a lot of songs but just now I'm trying my best to find as many as possible. A majority of the songs comes from female groups and soloists. The center track for "Food! Food! Food!" is Morning Musume's Mou Gaman Dekinai wa ~Love ice cream~.

For "From Dusk 'til Dawn," it's the opposite of what "Sparkles & Sunshine" is. This is for all of the people who want to enjoy songs with a mature, cool, and/or elegant concept. This is for all of the people who want a cool and upbeat song, but that's not all party "noise." The underlying genre for a majority of the songs is EDM; however, there are also some songs that have elements of R&B and house. These are the songs that you can listen and enjoy night and day. These are the songs that you can listen to anywhere you go. No matter what type of playlist you come up with, these songs might complement your selection of songs in one way or another. It's a lot of EDM with some hip-hop influences, especially in LDH groups. If you really love that edgy, mature, and cool concept – this is for you. Just imagine it: you're inside of a dark room being bathed in the neon lights, music is being blasted all around, you're with your friends and dancing. Or, you might be alone in your room and just wanted to have a good time. This is for everyone who wants to go all out with their summer music. One of the best things about summer is that there are so many sounds of music that you can enjoy. So what if you're not really into the cutesy, upbeat idol songs but you're not really into that much EDM either? What if you just want something more elegant, ephemeral? What about some Spanish-influence with guitars? For the people who want a song to dance to, something a little bit more romantic, this is the section for you. I hope that you enjoy listening to these songs during the sunset (hence the name "twilight") or whenever you wish~ It's your playlist, do whatever your heart leads. The center track I used to create this selection is Nishino Kana's Esperanza.

What I really like about J-pop is that there are so many faces to it. Whatever is mainstream isn't always bubblegum pop and EDM– there are a lot of other songs that top the charts as well. So I wanted to create a section of "summer-y" songs that really makes us reminisce about our youth or even describes our youth right now. We're having fun, we're going through a lot, we're nostalgic, we're angry, etc. The genres underlying this section incorporates a lot of rock. You might notice that there are also some anime songs that are included too. The center track that I used to create this selection of songs is Yonezu Kenshi's Loser.
