J-pop 30 Day Challenge ♡ Day One
I swear to God and to myself that I will not procrastinate on this series and slack off. I remembering being so behind and writing a whole compilation of answers. However, that was years ago. This is a new challenge, a new me! Round three, let's go!
Due to me being an anime and manga fan when I was younger, I feel like I was already exposed to Japanese music as a child. I love Kuraki Mai and Garnet Crow. I loved various openings and endings, especially from Detective Conan. However, I wouldn't say that it wasn't until much later on that I really got into Japanese pop music. I would say that the song that got me really hooked the genre was Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! by Buono! - which was the ending theme for another anime called Shugo Chara!
I loved magical girl animes when I was younger. You can just give me some random series and I'd probably devour it in days, or watch it weekly as subtitles were released. I absolutely adored Shugo Chara! and I would grow addicted to all of the opening and ending themes. It would eventually lead me to trying to find the full versions of each song, especially Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! since it was my favorite. At first, it was mainly AMVs or basic lyric videos with a picture of Amu as the background. And then I stumbled onto the music video, and holy shit- since that day, I was sucked into a blackhole of Japanese idol music and I never looked back since.
I love the song but I also remember loving the music video for it so much. I was mindblown; I was completely in awe. The girls were so pretty and the outfits looked so amazing in my opinion. I used to be easily impressed so when I watched it- I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw in my life. It was happy, colorful, cute, lively. I aspired to be like this. I wanted to pretty like Miyabi, cute like Momoko, charming like Airi. This mentality would stick with me for another year or two. I was completely hooked onto the song, onto the video. I remember thinking afterwards– I need to find more. I want to know about these girls. Consider me sucked into a blackhole that was Japanese pop music, even if it was the cutesy idol side.
It would be because of Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! that I would eventually start listening and watching more videos of the group. Over time, I did learn about the whole Hello! Project and due to some weird connection - I was lead to Hey! Say! JUMP and the rest of Johnny's. Afterwards, it was all history. I've been introduced to some many artists and groups, listened to so many amazing songs. I can't imagine my life that isn't influenced by Japanese pop music.
Listening to that song and finding the music video for it has been a real key turning point in my life. I'll admit now that I don't listen to the song anymore really. However, I would always feel nostalgic about it because this is what got me into J-pop. If it wasn't for Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!, maybe I would have never became a J-pop fan. Or maybe I wouldn't delve into the world of J-pop so early. Buono! has disbanded and I don't listen to their music much even now. However, I would be so grateful to them and their music for introducing me to this new genre of music that would end up becoming such a large part of my life now.
So that's the song that got me hooked onto J-pop: Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! by Buono!
What song got you hooked onto Japanese pop music? Let me know!
Until my next post, jyaa ne~
